What Is LEED Certification?
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, is a certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED building certification demonstrates a project’s compliance with certain prerequisites that reflect a dedication to protecting and preserving the natural environment. Santa Rita Waste Systems is proud to offer LEED-compliant rolloff containers for your next project in Tucson.
Areas Measured by LEED
LEED certification awards points in any one of nine key areas related to community development, building design, and construction. The site sustainability category encourages development and building strategies that minimize environmental impact. LEED’s water efficiency and energy and atmosphere categories promote the smarter use of water and energy to conserve resources and reduce waste. The Materials and resources, integrative processes, and innovative building techniques categories encourage the use of sustainable materials and interdisciplinary communication to improve efficiency. Other areas measured by LEED certification include location and transportation, indoor environmental quality, and regional environmental priority. There are five project types that can achieve LEED certification. These projects are homes, neighborhood development, building operations and maintenance, interior design and construction, and building design and construction.
Achieving LEED Certification
There are four levels of LEED certification: certified, silver, gold, and platinum. The number of points a project is awarded determines the level of LEED certification it receives. Points are awarded based upon compliance with LEED prerequisites in each category that LEED measures. The LEED certification process requires builders or designers to register their project with the USGBC and submit an application for certification. The application and building project are then examined by reviewers, who award points to determine level of LEED certification a given project has achieved.
